General Meetings 2023

General Meetings are scheduled for the third Wednesday of every second month as follows:
15 March (AGM), 17 May, 19 July, 20 September, 15 November.

We are very grateful to Howick High School for making their facilities available to us as the venue for our General Meetings. Their address is 30 Amber Avenue, Greendale Park, Howick. Please use the Jubilee Gate entrance (by the tennis courts, further down Amber Avenue from the main gate) to access the parking area. Follow the "U3A" signs to the venue in the main building. Please note that our General Meetings start promptly at 15:00 (3:00 PM) and you should arrive as soon after 14:30 as possible for registration / checking in. Please remember to bring your name tag.

The next General Meeting of U3A Howick will be held on Wednesday 15 November at 3:00 pm.

Please note that this meeting will be held in the Howick High School MEDIA CENTRE / LIBRARY (not the usual venue, which is in use for Exams). DIRECTIONS: enter the school grounds via Jubilee Gate, park and walk up the ramp on the side of the main building as usual. Proceed PAST the usual venue (the Team Teaching Room on the right) and turn LEFT at the next corridor.  The Media Centre will be straight ahead. We will also put up “U3A” signs to direct you.

The Guest Speakers will be a team from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, led by Tembisa Jordaan, presenting

"Biodiversity Stewardship"

Biodiversity Stewardship Stewardship is about being a custodian of land, using it wisely so that the natural environment is protected. Because this land is outside of the existing protected area system, such as National Parks, it needs to be carefully managed so that natural ecosystems and the range of biodiversity within them are protected. This will ensure that the land remains a valuable resource for present and future generations. KZN has two World Heritage Sites and over 100 formal protected areas. It is a biodiversity hotspot, and contains more than 4000 species, as well as diverse landscapes and vegetation types. However, less than 47% of these species are conserved in nature reserves. More of the natural land needs to be protected so that we can maintain the diversity of life and the functioning of important ecosystems in our province.

Tembisa Jordaan

Tembisa Jordaan is a Marine Scientist, and has taken part in a marine conservation documentary series called “Our Oceans”. She is Senior Manager: Biodiversity Economy and Stewardship, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and is coordinator for the Biodiversity Economy Initiative in the province. Tembisa investigates, analyses and documents activities relating to extraction of natural resources from KZN protected areas. She also conducts community engagements, carries out scientific investigations monitoring natural resources, and advises on sustainable use practices.

Tembisa will provide an overview of the programme and introduce the three Biodiversity Stewardship Facilitators: Zoluntu Ngwane, Derrek Ruyters and Nqobile Sibiya, who will each give a short presentation on different aspects of the programme.
